|San Mateo County Office of Education (SMCOE)
101 Twin Dolphin Drive Redwood City, California
|Enable U.S. middle and high school teacher to include modern China in their curriculum.
|Based on your school’s location:
$200 – for schools within 65 miles from SMCOE.

When possible, speaker presentations, panel discussions, and Q&A opportunities are scheduled in the early part of the day. Sessions for developing ideas on how modern China can be integrated into the standard 6-12 grade classes are usually scheduled later in the day. During the curriculum development sessions, teachers will have a chance to network and exchange ideas with each other and the speakers. In addition, the UC Berkeley History and Social Studies Project team will be available to help teachers develop curriculum material based on the topics presented in this Workshop.
Lunch time may include informal presentations, special activities, and/or networking opportunities with fellow teachers and the speakers.
In order to receive the stipend, or CEU credit, teachers are expected to:
- Actively participate in all sessions of the workshop, including lunch, on both days.
- Fill out the Day 1 and Day 2 Feedback Forms (by August 11, 2019)
- Submit at least one lesson proposal based on one of the topics at the workshop, using the 2019 Instructional Planning Worksheet. (by August 11, 2019)
Attending teachers are paid the stipend after they have met all the Workshop Obligations.
The stipend is determined based on the following factors:
|San Francisco Bay Area Teachers
|Teachers living within 65 miles from SMCOE
|Other California Teachers
|Teachers of California schools located more than 65 miles from SMCOE
|Teachers teaching in other states
CONTINUE EDUCATION CREDITS (CEU)
Workshop attendees can opt to receive 1.6 Continuing Education Units (CEU), in lieu of all or part of their stipend, from San Francisco State University’s College of Extended Learning. The fee for receiving these units is $200. If you select to receive the CEU credit, the 1990 Institute will pay this fee to SFSU directly for you out of your stipend, after you have completing all the Workshop requirements (same as for receiving the stipend). Information on how to register for the CEU credit will be available several weeks before the Workshop.
Meals and Refreshments
Free continental breakfast and lunch will be served each day. During lunch, teachers will have the rare opportunity to network with speakers and fellow teachers. For those that prefer to bring their own lunch, the facility has a lunch room with refrigerators, microwaves, and other supplies.
